A tweak of the first recipe has turned a Little Creatures original into a champion.
About six months ago the Creatures crew changed the hop in its popular Pilsner.
Head brewer at Little Creature’s Fremantle operation, Russ Gosling, said at the time, “We had a good discussion in the brewhouse around the Pilsner and we all felt it was time to shake it up.”
So the team added a German-devised hop called Perle which gave the Pilsner a subtle but effective taste change.
The Sip wrote “the change in alpha level has turned Little Creatures’ Original Pilsner (4.6 per cent) into a drink that could become one of the revelations of the Australian summer.”
The judges at the Australian Craft Beer Industry awards agreed. Last night the brew was deemed Champion Australian Craft Beer for 2016.
The revamped drop has the hallmarks of a Lager-style summer special before a slightly increased fruity edge is complemented by a strikingly yet refreshing bitterness. That is the where the Perle comes into play.
“We believe we’ve created what we call a creeper – where the bitterness in the beer creeps up on you to deliver uncompromising bitterness and intensity that’s still refreshing, balanced, dry and drinkable,” said
Pirate Life continued to ride their beer juggernaut by taking out the Large Champion Brewery title, also collecting the top prize in the Pale Ale category.
WA’s Colonial Brewing Company topped the Amber Dark Ale category with its Pale Ale.
