Crafty beer survey shines light on industry

June 23, 2017

Australian craft beer knows it is on the rise amongst consumers.

But that is the easy answer. What is in the detail?

Last year the sector got a reflection of its progress when retailer Beer Cartel picked the brains of 6500 craft brew aficionados.

The survey aimed to provide a snapshot of trends, likes and dislikes, favourite venues and how people are consuming products in the beer marketplace.

The results were fascinating. The included outcomes such as

- Feral Brewing voted Australia’s best craft brewery

- Victoria voted Australia’s best State for craft beer

- Australia voted the best beer producing nation in the World

- Pale Ale is the most consumed craft beer style in Australia

- Australian craft beer drinkers are frustrated by the beer selection at sporting and music events

- Australian craft beer drinkers believe the Government should do more to support the craft beer industry

Those survey details were intriguing. But they take on more meaning with the release of Beer Cartel’s Craft Beer Survey for 2017. Now there will be more data to compare trends and passions.

The aim of the survey is to help businesses throughout the craft beer industry; including breweries, bars and beer festivals.

Richard Kelsey, Director of Beer Cartel, said while the study will seek to measure changes in craft beer habits over the past year it will also provide a gauge of consumer sentiment towards craft beer ownership and the issue of independence which has been highly topical of late.

“There has been significant coverage in the media of late about the role big breweries are playing in craft beer, with a number of buy-outs in Australia and overseas,” he said.

“Plus on top of this the Craft Beer Industry Association (CBIA) recently changed its constitution, voting to remove large brewers from its membership and changing its name to the Independent Brewers Association.

“We’re taking an open view going in and will let beer drinkers decide on their opinion towards this. Is it a good thing, or a bad thing? We’ll soon know either way.’”

For craft beer drinkers the survey will take just five minute to complete. And, as an incentive to encourage people to take the survey a prize of $500 to spend on craft beer is being offered up for grabs.
